World class jiu jitsu and grappling at the heart of Columbia valley

About US

Our mat space on a bright summer day

Superior to Judo and to traditional Jujutsu in both its use of leverage and its focus on using submission holds to finish fights, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is the most effective grappling art in the world. BJJ in general, and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu (without the use of a kimono), employs the use of angles, leverages, and complex technical progressions to control and overwhelm opponents, inevitably leading to a submission. BJJ is the only martial art in existence that allows a practitioner to easily control an untrained opponent without hurting themselves or their assailant. Jiu Jitsu can be used in sport competitions or in a self defense scenario and tends to be the most effective way of neutralizing and submitting an opponent. It incorporates takedown techniques with an array of control positions to gain an advantage once a fight hits the ground, whether you are on your back or in a dominant position.

At Summit Jiu Jitsu our coaches have a huge amount of grappling experience for competitive sport Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial art competition and general self defense. We offer classes for all skill levels, where new students can join advanced students to learn and progress together. Classes offer precise technical instruction, movement drills, technique repetition and live sparring all in a controlled environment. Whether you are young or old, male or female, in shape or out of shape, Jiu Jitsu is a great way to expend energy and learn useful skills.

Professor Sam

10th planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Under Louis Ho

Sam Bergeron has been practicing Jiu Jitsu for the last 12 years and is a black belt under Louis Ho in the world renown 10th planet system developed by master Eddie Bravo. Sam is a no-gi grappling specialist who has developed a strategic and efficient competitive game that works at the highest level. Often being the smallest person in the room, Sam has developed style that doesn’t rely on strength and athleticism but rather on proper timing and off-balances. He routinely travels to train with world-class competitors like the Martinez brothers, with the mission to keep learning and pushing the art. Sam has a wealth of teaching experience that he is willing to share with anyone who steps on the mats.

Professor Ryan

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Anderson Goncalves

Ryan Hunter has been practicing Jiu Jitsu for the last 10 years and has developed a crushing top game and a tight and effective bottom game centered around MMA. Having accumulated a record of 4-1 as a professional, Ryan has stepped away from MMA in the last few years, but has continued to develop his Jiu Jitsu game adding new techniques to his arsenal while maintaining his suffocating style. Professor Ryan also has a great deal of wrestling experience that translates well to Jiu Jitsu and has also coached athletes in Boxing and Muay Thai. He is great at fine tuning details of the techniques he teaches and currently holds a black belt belt under Master Anderson Goncalves, a 5th degree black belt and pioneer of BJJ in the region.
